Busselton bundle Eaton out of SW Times Cup
Two goals in each half gave Busselton a well deserved 4-0 victory over Eaton in the SW Times Cup second round at Hay Park on Sunday
Busselton were on the attack creating early chances one of which was converted by Rob Seia in the fourth minute. Both teams were intent on attack but the tactical awareness and movement of the Busselton midfield was placing increasing pressure on the Eaton defence of Wilcox, Jumeaux, Rodgers and Portman. Oakey in the Eaton goal was called on to make a number of saves to keep Eaton in the game. Not to be out done by his brother, Michael Seia broke well down the left wing cut inside and scored with a cracking shot in the twentieth minute.
Eaton woke up and began to press forward with Sylla breaking down the right passing to Spurling whose shot was well saved by Tim Carrier the Busselton goalkeeper. Minutes later Eaton were handed a life line when awarded a penalty. Unfortunately for Eaton the Busselton goalkeeper saved that as well. Half time 2-0 to Busselton.
Eaton started the second half in a better frame of mind after the team talk by Coach Shilcof and they were increasingly on the attack with McMillan, Deane, Scantlebury and Quinn winning more 50:50 balls in midfield. Busselton proved to be more street wise and encouraged by coach Andy Cowley upped the tempo again applying increasing pressure forcing an error from a mistimed back pass which Rob Seia pounced on and slid past the stranded Eaton keeper Oakey.
The score was now 3-0 to Busselton half way through the second half but Eaton did not give up and applied increasing pressure down the left flank with left back Portman driving forward with some success finding an unmarked Rodgers whose shot went just wide .This was all to no avail as Tristan Carroll broke free after a good midfield move and slotted Busselton’s fourth late in the second half.
The game was all but over now for Eaton but they kept pressing to the end and although given both a tactical and skill lesson by Busselton they stuck to it and Coach Shilcof felt that the young side took a lot of positives from the game.
The game was competitive and it was characterised by tough tackling from both sides. Match referee Ray Suttie controlled the game well and spectators were treated to a fast free flowing game. Eaton are still a work in progress but Busselton look to be a team coming into form and look set for a good cup and league run in the weeks to come.
